The One With Rachel's Sister

Thursday, 3 February 2000

Rachel's sister Jill arrives in New York after their father cuts her off, and Rachel's insistence that Ross is worth dating pushes Jill into going out with him.

What happens

• Joey starts handing out free coffee and food to attractive customers in exchange for dates, and buys off Phoebe's objection with a free scone.
• Monica is sent home from work with a bad cold and refuses to admit she is sick.
• Jill explains that their father cut her off for buying a boat, and Rachel sets her a plan of finding a job, finding an apartment and staying with Phoebe meanwhile.
• Jill turns up with bags of new clothes charged to her father's card number, and Ross and Phoebe pretend the shopping was theirs.
• Rachel sees through the act and confiscates everything, but Ross quietly holds one bag back and gives it to Jill.
• Phoebe warns Rachel that she noticed something between Ross and Jill, and Rachel spirals over the idea of her sister and her ex.
• Jill calls Ross too bookish to date, and Rachel argues for him so hard that Jill decides to ask him out.
• Gunther catches Joey singing happy birthday to twenty different women in one day and bars him from giving away any more muffins.
• Ross thanks Rachel for the blessing and tells her he would never have considered Jill without it.
• Monica finally admits she is ill and asks Chandler to rub Vicks on her chest, which arouses him enough to abandon his rule about sick people.
• Rachel watches from Monica's window as Ross brings Jill back to his apartment and closes the drapes.
