The One With Rachel's New Dress

Thursday, 2 April 1998

Rachel's seduction dinner with Joshua ends with her meeting his parents while wearing a nightie, as Phoebe decides between Joey and Chandler for a baby name and Ross panics about Emily and Susan in London.

What happens

• Alice asks Phoebe to choose the name for the third baby.
• Emily and Susan hit it off and plan a week of theatre and sightseeing in London, and Ross admits he dislikes Susan.
• Joey and Chandler each pitch themselves to Phoebe as the baby's namesake.
• Rachel prepares to sleep with Joshua for the first time, while Monica does the actual cooking for the dinner.
• Joey attacks the name Chandler as barely a word, and Chandler is genuinely wounded by it.
• The chick and the duck frighten Joshua, who confesses that farm birds scare him, so Rachel packs up the meal and they move to his parents' empty apartment.
• Joshua's parents return early from Europe just as Rachel appears in a nightie, and she covers by claiming it is a Milan dress she is testing for Bloomingdale's.
• Mr. Burgin insists they all go out to eat, with Rachel still wearing the nightie.
• Phoebe, Rachel and Monica tell Ross that Carol leaving him made him jealous, and warn him not to ruin what he has with Emily.
• Chandler says he will change his name at the courthouse, so Phoebe agrees to name the baby Chandler if he keeps his own, and Joey realises Chandler staged the whole crisis.
