The One With the 'Cuffs

Thursday, 9 October 1997

Chandler dates Rachel's boss Joanna, who handcuffs him to a chair in her office and leaves, forcing Rachel to bargain for his release, while Monica caters a party for her mother.

What happens

• Rachel finds Joanna in Chandler's apartment and makes him promise to end the relationship.
• An encyclopedia salesman convinces Joey that the books would fill the gaps in his knowledge, and Joey invites him in.
• While catering her mother's party, Monica loses a fake nail into the quiches, and Mrs. Geller opens the freezer to show the backup lasagnas she bought expecting Monica to fail.
• Chandler breaks up with Joanna, who handcuffs him to her chair and then leaves the office for hours.
• Rachel lets herself into the locked office with a key Mark gave her, finds Chandler cuffed, and frees him only after he agrees to stop seeing Joanna.
• Phoebe persuades Monica to go back downstairs and serve a dish of her own instead of her mother's lasagna.
• Joey cannot afford the twelve-hundred-dollar set, so he spends his only fifty dollars on the single volume V.
• Rachel wins Chandler's cooperation by promising to spread flattering rumours about him.
• The guests eat Monica's casserole and leave the lasagna alone, and Mrs. Geller admits that she was wrong about her.
• Rachel arrives the next morning to find Joanna handcuffed to her own chair, and Joanna declares the relationship finished.
