The One With Ross's New Girlfriend

Thursday, 21 September 1995

Ross comes back from China with a new girlfriend, Julie, and Rachel misses her chance to tell him how she feels, while Phoebe botches Monica's haircut and Joey's tailor turns out to be groping his customers.

What happens

• Rachel scrambles through the airport to meet Ross and finds him getting off the plane with Julie, whom Ross introduces as they collect the bags.
• Rachel arrives home ahead of them and tells the others what she saw, blaming Chandler for encouraging her.
• Julie explains that she and Ross were in graduate school together and that she was running the dig he flew out to join.
• Rachel sends Chandler to find out where Ross stands, and Chandler comes back with the news that Ross has moved on and is happy with Julie.
• Monica asks Phoebe to cut her hair, and Phoebe turns her down on the grounds that Monica is too much of a control freak.
• Ross draws out a phone call with Julie in front of Rachel, and Rachel tells Monica she cannot stand it and walks out.
• Paulo comes out of Rachel's bedroom the next morning, and Rachel admits to the others that she slept with him because she was upset about Ross.
• Phoebe gives Monica the haircut but styles it after Dudley Moore, having misheard the name, and Monica is left with a cut she hates.
• Chandler reports that Frankie groped him during the fitting, and Joey realises that his family's tailor of twelve years has been measuring him wrong all along.
• Rachel takes Ross onto the balcony to tell him Paulo means nothing, but Ross praises her by comparing her to how happy he is with Julie, and Rachel drops what she was going to say.
