The One Where Dr. Ramoray Dies

Thursday, 21 March 1996

Joey brags in a magazine about rewriting his lines, so the writers kill his character down an elevator shaft; Monica and Richard compare their pasts and say they love each other; Eddie accuses Chandler of sleeping with his ex.

What happens

• Phoebe pushes Chandler to get to know Eddie and then leaves the two of them alone, and Eddie's account of his breakup with Tilly leaves Chandler unnerved.
• Monica invites Richard to spend the night at her apartment, and Phoebe's toast tips Richard off that Monica has dated a great many men.
• Tilly drops a fishtank off for Eddie, and Eddie comes home and accuses Chandler of sleeping with her.
• Joey shows Phoebe a magazine profile crediting him with writing his own lines, one of the show's writers reads it, and Joey's next script has his character fall down an elevator shaft.
• Rachel lists her four previous partners for Ross and calls what she had with Paolo purely physical, which wounds Ross.
• Richard tells Monica her number does not bother him and admits he has only ever slept with women he loved, and Monica tells him she loves him too.
• Monica and Rachel find only one condom in the apartment and Rachel wins it at rock-paper-scissors, so Monica puts her night with Richard off until tomorrow.
• The friends watch the episode without Joey and see his character plunge to his death down the elevator shaft.
• Joey shuts himself in his apartment and tells the others that the soap was the best thing that ever happened to him.
• Eddie presents Chandler with a replacement fish that is really a goldfish cracker and tells him he has named it after Chandler.
