The One Where Rachel Quits

Thursday, 12 December 1996

Rachel quits her waitressing job to force herself toward fashion and lands one after a bad interview, while Ross sells Brown Bird cookies for the girl whose leg he broke.

What happens

• Ross swings a racquet on the stairs to show off and knocks a Brown Bird named Sarah down, breaking her leg.
• Ross visits Sarah and learns she wanted to win a trip to Spacecamp by selling the most cookies, so he takes over her route.
• Phoebe apologises to Joey for judging his tree lot, then sees a dead tree fed into the chipper and is horrified.
• Chandler and Joey tell Rachel that keeping a job she hates removes any reason to find a better one, and Rachel gives Gunther her notice.
• Ross has sold five hundred and seventeen boxes by working late crowds and university dorms, and Monica begs him for more cookies.
• Joey tells Rachel his father heard of an opening at Fortunata Fashions and offers to get her an interview.
• At the Brown Bird tally Ross comes second, beaten by a nineteen-year-old who borrowed her sister's uniform.
• Rachel admits she ruined the interview, and finds that Terry has already hired a new waitress in her place.
• Joey and Monica surprise Phoebe with the discarded trees they rescued, and Rachel takes a call telling her she got the job.
• Ross brings Sarah to Joey and Chandler's apartment, which the three of them have decorated as a private Spacecamp for her.
