The One With the Race Car Bed

Thursday, 7 November 1996

Rachel makes Ross have dinner with her disapproving father, Phoebe signs for a delivery as Monica and saddles her with a race car bed, and Joey sabotages the student he is coaching for a role he wants.

What happens

• Rachel tells Ross her father is coming to dinner, and Ross agrees to come only after she bargains with him.
• Monica shops at the Mattress King despite the store belonging to Janice's ex-husband, and Phoebe drops her objection once she tries the mattress.
• Phoebe signs the delivery form in Monica's name, then gets caught up boxing with Joey and lets the movers carry a race car bed into Monica's room.
• Ross secretly adds a twenty to cover Dr. Green's four percent tip, and Dr. Green catches him, tears up the bill and leaves Ross to pay for the whole dinner.
• One of Joey's acting students asks Joey to coach him for the boxer part on All My Children, the same role Joey is auditioning for.
• Rachel breaks down over the idea of keeping Ross and her father apart, and Ross agrees to try again at brunch.
• Monica finds the race car bed, Phoebe admits she signed for it as Monica, and the store will not take it back.
• Joey admits to the others that he told his student to play the boxer as gay because he wanted the part for himself.
• At brunch Ross and Dr. Green finally get along by agreeing that Rachel's chiropractor is a fraud and that she needs renter's insurance.
• Monica goes back to the store to undo the sale, Joey pushes past the clerk to demand the king, and Janice is in the back room.
