The One With Joey's Bag

Thursday, 4 February 1999

Phoebe's grandmother dies and the father who abandoned her turns up at the memorial, while Joey's new shoulder bag costs him an audition and Chandler finally admits he hates Monica's massages.

What happens

• Monica's massage leaves Chandler in real pain, and he tells Joey he would rather lie about it than damage his first serious relationship.
• Phoebe tells the group that her grandmother collapsed and died at the market that morning.
• Rachel dresses Joey for an audition and adds a shoulder bag, which Joey decides suits him.
• Phoebe brings the news to Ursula, and Ursula refuses to come to the memorial service.
• A stranger at the memorial gives his name as Frank Buffay, takes it back and hurries out, and Phoebe realizes she has just met her father.
• Monica's massage makes Phoebe cry out in pain, and in front of everyone Chandler admits he has been pretending to enjoy them.
• The casting director asks Joey to read without the bag, and Joey argues about the bag until the audition is cut short.
• Chandler tells Monica the truth and then talks her round by naming her the best bad masseuse there is.
• Frank Sr. asks Phoebe to deliver a note to Lilly, and Phoebe tells him that Lilly died seventeen years ago and that she is his daughter.
• Frank Sr. apologizes for leaving, and Phoebe takes his hand but tells him she is not ready to forgive him yet.
• Joey learns the bag lost him the part, and Rachel agrees with the others that he should give it up.
