The One With Ross's Sandwich

Thursday, 10 December 1998

Joey keeps taking the blame for Chandler and Monica's secret until he claims he slept with Monica, while Ross unravels over a stolen sandwich and Rachel fakes her way through Phoebe's literature class.

What happens

• Phoebe pulls a pair of men's underwear out of the couch and Joey claims it as his own to cover for Chandler and Monica.
• Joey tells Chandler and Monica he is done lying for them, and they talk him into continuing because they believe the secrecy is why the relationship is working.
• Ross turns up wrecked because a colleague ate his Thanksgiving leftover sandwich, and Monica offers him the ingredients for one more.
• In Phoebe's literature class Rachel, who never read the novel, repeats Phoebe's reading of it to the teacher as her own, and Phoebe accuses her of taking it.
• The threatening note Phoebe wrote works, and Ross finds that intimidating his colleagues gets him deadlines and reports on his own terms.
• Ross's boss admits he ate the sandwich and threw most of it in the bin, and Ross screams at him.
• Phoebe pays Rachel back by telling her that Jane Eyre is a cyborg, and Rachel repeats it to the class.
• Ross tells Chandler and Monica that a psychiatrist has put him on a tranquilliser and the museum has made him take time off.
• Rachel catches Joey looking at a naked photograph of Monica and accuses him in front of everyone.
• To protect Chandler and Monica, Joey says he slept with Monica in London, and Monica takes the blame for the underwear, the camera and the photograph.
