The One With Rachel's Assistant

Thursday, 26 October 2000

Rachel is promoted at Ralph Lauren and hires an unqualified but handsome assistant, Joey loses both of his television jobs and wins one back, and Chandler's no-secrets rule with Monica drags out his and Ross's worst college stories.

What happens

• The friends watch Joey's robot show and quietly divide up which weak compliment each of them will offer, until Phoebe's wordless dodge tells Joey the show is bad.
• Rachel and Joey talk over each other with their news: Ralph Lauren has made Rachel a merchandising manager with a raise and an assistant, and Days of Our Lives wants Joey back as Drake's twin brother.
• Rachel interviews the experienced Hilda, then meets Tag, who has no office experience, and she photographs him on a pretext.
• Chandler declares that married couples keep no secrets and trades Ross's humiliating Disneyland story for what Phoebe whispered to Monica, then finds the trade worthless.
• Terry tells Joey he has to audition like everyone else, and Joey insults him and walks out of the soap job.
• Rachel hires Tag instead of Hilda and sends him downstairs to send Hilda home.
• Ross works out that Chandler told Monica, and retaliates by revealing that Chandler once kissed a man in an Atlantic City bar.
• The producers cancel Joey's robot show, leaving him with no work at all after his outburst at the soap.
• Joey goes back and apologises to Terry, and the next scene shows him shooting a hospital scene as Dr. Stryker Ramoray.
• Tag tells Rachel that men have been asking him out and that he is not gay, then admits he wants to date Phoebe, so Rachel tells him Phoebe is gay.
