The One With the Nap Partners

Thursday, 9 November 2000

Rachel and Phoebe compete to be Monica's maid of honor through an audition judged by Ross and Joey, while Chandler apologises to an old girlfriend he dumped for gaining weight and Joey and Ross discover they nap well together.

What happens

• Monica tells Rachel and Phoebe about a rotating arrangement in which each of them serves as maid of honor for the others, and leaves the choice of her own to the two of them.
• Phoebe asks Rachel to be her maid of honor and says she has never held the job herself, so Rachel concedes Monica's wedding to her.
• Ross and Joey fall asleep on the couch together after the film, wake up appalled, and agree never to mention it again.
• Chandler recognises the woman who mocked Monica's engagement as Julie Grath, a girlfriend from summer camp he dropped after she gained weight.
• Joey mentions that Phoebe has been a maid of honor before, her lie collapses, and he offers to settle the fight with an audition that he and Ross will judge.
• Joey presses Ross until Ross admits the nap was the best he has ever had, and Ross then rules out a second one.
• At the audition Rachel talks Joey out of his pretend cold feet and delivers a warm toast, while Phoebe tackles Ross as the drunk uncle and then claims she and Rachel shower together.
• Monica, reminded of a boy who rejected her as a child, sends Chandler to apologise to Julie, who had never known weight was his reason, and Chandler then tells Monica her size would not change how he loves her.
• Rachel shows Phoebe the wedding keepsakes she has been saving for Monica, and Phoebe, who won the audition, hands her the job.
• Ross and Joey nap together again, and this time Joey is the one who wakes up outraged.
