The One With the Mugging

Thursday, 13 February 2003

Joey discovers that needing the bathroom makes his audition work and wins a Broadway role, Phoebe realizes she is the teenager who mugged Ross years ago, and Chandler starts an unpaid advertising internship.

What happens

• Chandler announces that his new advertising job is an unpaid internship that hires only the trainees the company likes.
• Joey's first reading for director Lennart Haze goes badly and Haze tells the producers he cannot act, so Joey asks for a second chance and takes Haze's notes.
• A mugger holds up Ross and Phoebe, Phoebe recognizes him as an old friend from her street days, and Ross learns that she used to mug people herself.
• Chandler tells Monica he cannot compete with the much younger interns and has no idea how to sell the prototype sneakers he has been assigned.
• Ross describes being mugged outside a comic shop as a boy, and Phoebe works out from the details that she was the one who robbed him.
• Joey arrives at the callback desperate for the bathroom, and Haze is so taken with the urgency in his performance that he invites him back again.
• Phoebe confesses to Ross that she mugged him, and Ross refuses to forgive her.
• Chandler pitches an advertisement in which a child on the sneakers outruns a falling older man, and his boss calls it exactly the right selling point.
• Phoebe brings Ross the Science Boy artwork she kept from the mugging, and Ross thanks her.
• Joey plays the final callback in real physical distress and Haze gives him the part.
