The One With Rachel's Dream

Thursday, 17 April 2003

Rachel watches Joey shoot a soap opera love scene and then dreams about kissing him, Monica and Phoebe fall out over Phoebe's music outside the restaurant, and Chandler takes Ross to Vermont.

What happens

• Joey lands his first romantic storyline on the soap opera and asks Rachel to come to the set and tell him whether he is any good.
• Chandler's romantic inn booking turns out to be non-refundable and Monica is too busy at the restaurant, so Ross agrees to go to Vermont with him instead.
• Rachel watches Joey play a scene in which his character begs Olivia not to marry another man, and the near-kiss leaves her rattled.
• Phoebe sets up outside Monica's restaurant to entertain the queue, and Monica tells her the place is classy, which Phoebe answers by dressing up without changing a single song.
• The inn has no record of Chandler's reservation and charges him six hundred dollars for the only room left, so Ross decides they will recover the money by taking every free thing in the hotel.
• In a dream, Rachel reads Olivia's lines opposite Joey, asks him to kiss her and kisses him, then wakes up in her own bed unsettled.
• Ross drills Chandler on the difference between stealing and collecting what the hotel owes them, and the two of them work their way through the toiletries, the bulbs and the batteries.
• Rachel tells Monica about the dream, and Monica suggests that what Rachel wants is not Joey but the character he plays.
• Monica tells Phoebe to stop playing outside the restaurant, and the two of them trade insults about her singing and her cooking.
• Monica polls her own diners about the music, the poll turns into both women admitting through raised hands that they were wrong, and they apologise and make up.
• Rachel finds peanut butter in Joey's hair and concludes that her feelings are for Drake and not for Joey.
• Joey, coached by Rachel to draw on real memories, tells her that the only time he was in love was with her and describes watching her before she was awake, which leaves Rachel shaken.
