The One With the Fertility Test

Thursday, 1 May 2003

Monica and Chandler take fertility tests and learn that both of them have problems conceiving, while Ross coaches Joey through a museum date with Charlie and Rachel discovers Phoebe secretly works at the spa chain she condemns.

What happens

• Charlie tells Ross she is embarrassed about kissing Joey and mentions that the men she usually dates are professors and paleontologists.
• Phoebe objects to Rachel's gift certificate for a corporate spa, asks her as a friend not to use it, and tears the certificate up once Rachel promises.
• Monica tells Chandler they are taking fertility tests the next day after a year of trying for a baby, and Chandler reluctantly agrees despite hating the idea of the cup.
• Rachel turns up at the spa with the certificate taped back together, and Phoebe, who works there, panics and tries to get another therapist to take the appointment.
• Joey admits to Ross that he is afraid Charlie will think he is stupid, and Ross plans the museum trip for him down to which way to turn at the door.
• Janice appears in the clinic waiting room and delightedly mocks Chandler over the specimen cup while Monica goes off for her own exam.
• Rachel reveals she recognised Phoebe by her slippers, Phoebe confesses she took the job for the money and benefits and feels ashamed, and Rachel encourages her to quit.
• Charlie tells Ross that Joey clearly memorised the art talk and that she may belong with someone she has more in common with, and Ross talks her into staying with Joey.
• The doctor's results come back showing that Chandler's sperm have low motility and Monica's body is hostile to them, so a baby may never happen for them.
• Phoebe arrives for her shift at the spa the next morning instead of quitting, and finds Rachel booked as her first client again.
