The One With the Donor

Thursday, 8 May 2003

A poor fertility result pushes Monica and Chandler toward a sperm donor, and after auditioning a coworker they choose adoption instead, while Rachel privately admits a crush on Joey that Charlie overhears and misunderstands.

What happens

• The fertility doctor tells Monica and Chandler that their odds of conceiving naturally are poor, and lays out surrogacy, a sperm donor, or adoption.
• Ross learns he is in the running to give the keynote at a paleontology conference in Barbados, and invites his friends to come.
• Chandler rules out surrogacy because Monica has always wanted to carry a child herself, which leaves a donor as the remaining option.
• On a shopping trip, Rachel confesses to Phoebe that she has feelings for Joey, and Phoebe agrees to keep it to herself.
• Chandler brings his colleague Zack home for dinner as a candidate donor, and Monica is angry that he set it up without her.
• Ross's presentation puts Professor Sherman to sleep, and Ross cannot wake him without admitting who bored him.
• Charlie tells Rachel she overheard the whispering and believes it is Phoebe who likes Joey, and Rachel lets her believe it.
• Ross wakes the professor by thanking him for the keynote spot he never offered, and Sherman accepts the thanks.
• Phoebe runs into David, back from Minsk for good and single, and they skip her party for a drink.
• Monica tells Chandler she does not want a child by anyone but him, and the two of them decide to adopt.
