The One With the Sharks

Thursday, 17 October 2002

Ross carelessly points out that Phoebe has never had a serious relationship, ruining her date with Mike, then covers for it with an invented ex-boyfriend; in Tulsa, Monica mistakes what Chandler was watching for an attraction to sharks.

What happens

• Ross tells Phoebe that she has never had a serious relationship, and she breaks down in tears just as Mike arrives to collect her.
• Joey suggests that Monica fly to Tulsa to surprise Chandler, and Monica decides to go.
• Phoebe reports that she cried through the whole date, and blames Ross for costing her a man she liked.
• Ross tracks Mike down to apologise, learns that Mike has already asked Phoebe out again, and then invents a six-year boyfriend named Vicrum to cover his mistake.
• Monica walks in on Chandler in his hotel room, sees sharks on the television, and phones Rachel convinced that sharks arouse her husband.
• Joey works out mid-date that he has already slept with Hayley, is offended that she does not remember it, and takes Monica's advice to see her again anyway.
• Phoebe hears about the Vicrum lie, insists she will tell Mike the truth, then loses her nerve and tells Mike that Vicrum has called.
• Hayley's roommate walks in, and Joey realises he slept with the roommate rather than with Hayley.
• Phoebe admits to Mike that Vicrum was invented and that she has never had a long relationship, and Mike kisses her.
• Monica offers Chandler a shark video, Chandler explains he was watching ordinary pornography, and Monica admits she is very drunk.
