The One Where Emma Cries

Thursday, 3 October 2002

Ross reacts to Rachel's engagement to Joey by breaking his thumb on Joey's face and deciding they will only be co-parents, while Chandler sleeps through a meeting and accepts a transfer to Tulsa.

What happens

• In her hospital room Ross confronts Rachel about accepting Joey's proposal, and Rachel explains she was exhausted enough to have said yes to anyone.
• Back at the apartment Rachel wakes the sleeping Emma against Phoebe's warning, and Emma starts crying and will not stop.
• Chandler dozes through his divisional meeting and agrees without hearing the question to run the company's Tulsa office.
• At the coffee house Ross refuses to discuss the engagement with Joey, and Joey insists he did nothing wrong.
• Joey goads Ross into hitting him, then ducks, and Ross breaks his thumb on the wall behind him.
• Chandler tells Monica about Tulsa, Monica refuses to move to Oklahoma, and Chandler promises to get out of the job.
• Chandler tries to turn the transfer down in Ms. McKenna's office, loses his nerve, and tells her he will call her from Tulsa.
• While Joey fills in his hospital forms, Ross says he does not want to be someone Rachel would have accepted at random, and decides they will stay friends who share a child.
• Monica bounces Emma to sleep, and Rachel announces that Monica is now on call in the apartment day and night.
• Chandler returns, tells Monica they are moving to Tulsa after all, and runs out before she can argue.
